2006 Fall Finale - F.A.S.T. RACE
The quickest and fastest F.A.S.T. quick-8 field ever was held at Raceway Park in Englishtown New Jersey. Three cars qualified in the 10's and the bump spot was an 11.60. The final race of the 2006 season had a lot of very close racing with a few upsets thrown in as well. Weather was cool and crisp with sunny sky's keeping the track warm and sticky during the day, but as the early evening settled in racers had to compensate for the changing track conditions. Many racers ran their personal bests at this event and 2 new cars broke into the 10's. Terry Pennington smashed into the 10's with his 10.77 in his Corvettes first F.A.S.T. race. Joel Nystrom is one of the hardcore 4 speed drivers, Joel ran an awesome 10.92 with a mind numbing 1.69 60ft time. All of this with G-70-14 bias-Ply tires and a 4 speed trans. Great job guys!
Both qualifying runs were run in the afternoon but due to track scheduling and high volume of other cars the F.A.S.T. class did not run 1st round until 5:30 in the evening. The cooling track set the stage for some incredible upsets. Too much horsepower and too little traction can make launching a F.A.S.T. car very tricky. First round saw #1 qualifier Terry Pennington paired up with the #8 qualifier of Dave Dudek in a 1970 Dodge Challenger. Even with a 9 tenth qualifying advantage to the Corvette, Dave did a better job of launching the Dodge to beat the tire spinning Corvette 11.68 to 11.95. This just goes to show how anyone has a chance in the quick 8 and there are no easy races. Second round cars were paired up in the staging lanes, but due to an error by track personnel, they re-paired up the cars incorrectly. Car pairing should of been #2 Wayne Nelson's Corvette vs #3 Joel Nystrom's GTX and #4 Greg Gessler's GS vs #8 Dave Dudek's Challenger. Greg had to now race Waynes 10 second Corvette. Both cars staged and launched at the first hint of the flashing pro-tree. Greg's Buick jumped to lead as Waynes Corvette fought for traction. With both cars hooked up and throttle wide open it became a race to the finish line. Waynes car has about a 5 MPH advantage over the Buick GS and the Corvette was closing in fast, but not fast enough The Buick GS crossed the finish line first 11.00 to the Corvettes 10.95. A better starting line reaction enabled the Buick to cross the finish line about 6 feet ahead of the hard charging Corvette. Another upset and super close race!
Joel Nystrom's 1967 Hemi GTX 4 speed and Greg Gessler's 1972 Buick Stage1 GS were paired up in the final round. Joel qualified in #3 position with an 10.92 and Greg qualified close behind in the #4 spot with an 11.00. The final round was anyone's race. In the staging lanes the two finalists wished each other a good race and talk of a possible 10 second final. Both cars did their burnouts and pulled to the christmas tree. The Hemi staged first and even deep staged. Both cars were set for kill. The pro tree lights flashed and they were off. Joel immediately over powered the 70 series tires and the Buick never looked back. Greg Gessler's Buick GS crossed the finish line for the win. 11.05 to the GTX's traction limited 11.64.
