1966 Corvette. Numbers Matching. All Original. Investment.
The Corvette joined the family in 1968 and these are words I grew up with. They stayed with me every weekend that I looked for just the right spot to park on the VFW Hall lawn.
That all changed in 1999 when a friend showed me a copy of Muscle Car Review. Here were some guys with cars nicer than mine absolutely beating the snot out them on the quarter mile. I think my exact quote was “Either these guys are stupid, or they are having more fun than the law allows.” I followed the Pure Stocks religiously after that, watched as the time slips piled up as rare and valuable cars were flogged and I started to get my show pony ready to race.
The car was supposed to debut in 2003, but a month long thrash came up a week short. I did enjoy that month, though, as my 7 year old son made his Crew Chief debut. I made the trip up to Stanton to watch the racing anyway. I was blown away with the site and sounds in the pits, the quality of the cars and of people who drive them.
The Corvette finally made it’s first ever pass down the dragstrip June 25th, 2004 and laid down a blistering 15.20 @ 93 mph. by the end of the weekend, the car was running a respectable 14.27 @ 97 mph. My Crew Chief and Charter Fan Club Member enjoyed a couple of passes in Dad’s car.
