2010 F.A.S.T.
SPRING Nationals
At Hemmings Musclepalooza XI*
May 29th - 30th, Lebanon Valley Dragway - West Lebanon, New York
Hemmings Musclepalooza is a favorite of F.A.S.T. racing fans. Thousands of F.A.S.T. fans got to witness some incredible F.A.S.T. racing.
Racers started to arrive at the track on Friday and by Saturday morning the F.A.S.T. pits were buzzing with activity. Saturdays all day qualifying session was well used by racers to fine tune their combination to the Lebanon Valley track. A giant cook out and get together was held after the race day was completed. A good time was had by all! Several new racers arrived on Sunday morning and we extended the qualifying to include the single qualifying session that morning. It is to everyone's benefit to attend the Saturday qualifying session, as a single qualifying run can produce unexpected results in the qualifying order. Racers best ET was used to build qualifying ladders and pair up the 2 out of 3 shootout participants. We did not have a full field of Factory Stock cars, so they were merged into the F.A.S.T. ranks. After reviewing the quick-8 ladder, the top 8 qualifiers all agreed to change the race day format for a quick-8 ladder to a 2 out of 3 shootout format, due to the large spread between qualifier #1 and #8. The racers like the change and the fans got to see super close racing.
Sunday was the big day for Hemmings Muscle Palooza XI, a huge car show, multiple bracket classes plus several exhibition racecar classes and the main attraction, F.A.S.T. and Factory Stock cars!
Terry McGean, the Editor of Hemmings Muscle Machines came over to discuss the Hemmings $1,000.00 Bounty. The Bounty is for the racer that breaks the previous F.A.S.T. class low ET at a Hemmings event. The previous low ET set last year at Lebanon Valley was 10.46.
Sunday was a busy day with hundreds of F.A.S.T. and F/S fans browsing at all the Stock looking Muscle cars in awe of their performances. Ex-FAST Video man Mike Kamm was manning the FAST T-shirt tent and answering questions from the fans. FAST has new business cards to distribute to fans and potential racers with the FAST website address and contact information.
With a record attendance of show and race cars, the Lebanon Valley track Crew did an amazing job of keeping everything on schedule. FAST racing was wrapped up quicker than ever before. The change in format to the 2/3 shootouts also speed things up as that eliminated the extra rounds of consultation races. Immediately before the F.A.S.T. cars would run, it was standard practice for the starting line crew to inspect the starting line and make any prep required.
When the FAST cars were called out for first round of elimination, the grand stands were packed and all eyes were on Lane Carey's 1971 Ford Mustang and Dave Dudek's 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner. Both Lane and Dave had run quick enough to take the $1000.00 Hemmings ET bounty. FAST announcer, Greg Gessler was in the tower announcing the FAST action. Before the cars were brought out into the burnout boxes, Greg took the opportunity to thank the sponsors, National Parts Depot and ZDDPlus that make FAST possible, and gave the fans a quick primer on FAST and Factory stock racing. Highlighting the fact that these cars must use the correct carburetor, intake manifold, cylinder heads, and cast iron exhaust manifolds on reproduction bias-ply street tires.
Dudek and Carey, two proven 10 second cars at the line. Both cars got off the line cleanly and it was anyone's race. The ET clocks told the story, Dudek took the win 10.25 to Carey's 10.34! Next up was qualifiers #3 & 4, Dave Finns 1963 Max Wedge and James Cooks 1969 6 pak Roadrunner, James hole-shotted Dave with a superior reaction time and won the race with a slightly slower ET 11.42 to 11.40. Mike Nasi and Tom (Big Shooter) Cannon were up next. Mike took the win light with an 11.89 ET after Tom's red light. Qualifier #7 was Scott McKenzie with his 69 Roadrunner and #8 was Brian Wilsey in this brand new 1970 Duster 340. Scott won with a 12.25 & quicker RT to Brian's 12.20.
Round 2 was even more exciting than round one. Lane Carey wanted to even up the score, when the Christmas lights flashed, Lanes car could not hold all the Ford Horsepower on tap and ended spinning the tires and losing close to 2 tenths of a second in his 60 foot. Meanwhile in the other lane, Dudek blasted off the starting line with an awesome 1.60 60 foot and ran a new FAST ET record of 10.18 at 136 MPH. Dudek won the shootout and also won the $1000.00 Hemmings Bounty check! Congratulations Dave Dudek!
Check out all of the results from all the FAST and Factory stock elimination listed below. It now includes stats regarding reaction times and 60 foot times. After racing was over, it was time again to crank up the BBQ for some good eats. Ken Mild brought down some Maine lobster again this year to everyone's delight. A very good ending to another great FAST event!
