WAYNE NELSON's
1969 L88 CORVETTE
Wayne has owned this sleek looking rocket since 1999. Primarily using the car on the street, he also made occasional trips to the dragstrip, having fun with the Tri-powered, Aluminum headed 427, backed by a 4 speed trans. The cars previous owner had road raced the Corvette on and off for over 10 years and to help the car handle better on the road courses added 92 pounds of lead to the corners of the car. Of course, Wayne has since removed this extra weight. By the summer of 2001, Wayne was drag racing the car in the Pure Stock class at Brainerd International Raceway more frequently. In 2002 Wayne converted the car to L88/Automatic trans specs with the goal of racing at the 2003 PSMCDR (Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race) in Stanton Michigan. Waynes car was an immediate success, running the first ever 11 second pass in pure stock trim. (11.99 @ 118 MPH) Next, Wayne set his sights on F.A.S.T., and modified the car to run this class in June of 2004. Still using his pure stock shortblock, Wayne ran respectable times in the 11.68 range. During the winter of 2004, Wayne decided to step-up the car and built his new 511 cubic inch engine. The new engine along with suspension tuning enabled Waynes Corvette to become the First F.A.S.T. car to run in the 10's. Running a 10.97 at the 2005 Lebanon Valley F.A.S.T. race. The Corvette has excellent weight distribution and has proven to be a very capable and consistent performer on the G-70-15 Bias-ply tires. The final F.A.S.T. race of 2005 was held at Englishtown Raceway Park, with excellent atmospheric and track conditions, Wayne ran and incredible 10.59 @ 130 MPH! Looking at this car defies logic, 1.61 60ft times on G-70, Bias Ply street tires with a totally stock looking car. Way Cool!
