DAVE Heilala's
1968 Oldsmobile cutlass S
Dave has participated in many F.A.S.T. events in the Factory Stock Class with his rare Oldsmobile W-31 Ramrod. Everyone has problems pronouncing his last name, so we call him Dave H. 1968 was the first year for the W-31 and Oldsmobile built an original batch of 500 W-31's. Dave's car is from this original 500 cars. Dave has a long history with this car, he is the original owner of this beauty, in fact Dave worked for Oldsmobile and actually walked the assembly line while his car was being built. W-31 was the name for Oldsmobiles high performance 350 engine, it was factory blueprinted and dyno tested. The W-31 was definitely not your average run of the mill factory engine. Oldsmobile installed the stout W-31 camshaft made for high RPM operation. In 1968 Oldsmobile rightly assumed that 95% of all W-31 owners would immediately install tubular exhaust headers so Oldsmobile did not put any thought into the exhaust manifolds and installed generic log exhaust manifolds. Since Dave races in the Factory Stock and Pure Stock race classes, he must retain the original exhaust manifolds. Despite this, the W-31 is a very strong competitor, able to out run and beat most small blocks. Best ET to date is 13.3 @ 104.5 MPH , in Pure Stock trim on reproduction Bias-Ply tires.
