2003 YEAR ONE BRISTOL BASH - F.A.S.T. RACE
The 2003 Bristol Bash F.A.S.T. attracted more cars than ever before. New and upcoming competitors filled the field with more 11 second cars. Year One's annual event was a smashing success with perfect weather and more cars in attendance. This is a must see event! Several F.A.S.T. competitors commented that spectators from all over the country told them that they came specifically to see the F.A.S.T. cars run. Many could not believe that the F.A.S.T. cars are really using reproduction bias-ply street tires! Interestingly, this was the first F.A.S.T. event where a ET record was not broken. Bristol's higher altitude was enough to hold the cars back slightly. Newcomer Bob Lindquist made a strong showing with his Buick GS, qualifying in the #3 spot and making it all the way to the semi finals before losing to the ZL1 Camaro of Terry Pennington.
The Final pairing was Number two qualifier Terry Pennington and his 1969 ZL1 427 Camaro and number one qualifier Greg Gessler with his 455 Buick GS. Greg is no stranger to the F.A.S.T. final rounds, as he has been in the finals for every F.A.S.T. race except one. This final round was the longest final in F.A.S.T. ever! Due to starting line mishaps, such as running a full tree as opposed to pro tree, it took 1, 2, 3, FOUR tries to get the cars off and running. The repeated cycles of burnouts and staging, built more and more heat into Greg Gessler's all cast iron engine, Terry's all aluminum ZL1 engine always runs cool and was not effected by extra heat build-up. After the 3rd try at the starting line, Terry, showing good sportsmanship, graciously suggested that Greg's Buick be allowed to cool down. After a 10 minute cool down period the cars returned to the burnout box to heat their tires and stage. Finally the pro tree lights flashed and the cars were off. Greg had a superior reaction time and got a jump off the starting line. Greg needed this starting line advantage as his car ET fell off do to the heat soak. Even with Terry's quicker 11.50, Greg got to the finish line first with a slower 11.57. Greg Gessler won the Year One Bristol Bash F.A.S.T. race for the third year in a row!
